Anne and John met in January 1974 at Prentiss Hall at Wayne State University. In the first week of spring quarter John tried, unsuccessfully, to transfer into a class that Anne had properly registered for. What was successful however was an exchange of names, so that when the two encountered each other the following September  they struck up an acquaintance, and eventually much more. It was a meeting cunningly foretold (or perhaps bespelled) by one Sylvia Zielinski, who John should remain ever grateful to.
